Greengage have contributed to a consultation exercise by the BRE aimed at addressing new changes to the BREEAM Land Use and Ecology Category. We shared our thoughts (positive and negative!) on the existing scheme and were asked to provide comments on how future iterations of the scheme could be improved to help our clients.
Our criticism included the lack of an ‘innovation’ credit – existing projects are not rewarded for pushing the boundaries on ecological enhancement, with the inclusion of a single enhancement on one project for example earning the same number of credits as another project which includes a wide range of ecological features.
The Land Use and Ecology category is heavily weighted within BREEAM and a credit here and there can therefore be the deciding factor between a Very Good or Excellent rating! We always work to maximise credits for our clients and have our say where possible, but it would interesting to understand what changes others would like to see in the new BREEAM Land Use and Ecology category.
