Greengage helped Broadway Malyan Holdings measure its global carbon footprint and create a clear, actionable pathway to net zero for its UK operations.
Greengage was commissioned by Broadway Malyan Ltd on behalf of its parent company Broadway Malyan Holdings, to establish a carbon baseline for the group’s global operations. We were also appointed to develop net zero targets and a strategy for the UK operations, supporting the company’s wider sustainability ambitions.
Broadway Malyan Ltd is a subsidiary of Broadway Malyan Holdings, a global architecture, urbanism, and design practice with studios in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The organisation recognises its environmental responsibility and is committed to achieving net zero carbon by 2050.
Greengage developed a carbon baseline for Broadway Malyan Holdings’ operations across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. We then set net zero targets for the UK operations in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and developed energy use intensity targets for the company’s UK offices in London, Manchester, and Birmingham. This was followed by a net zero strategy that outlined actionable recommendations to reduce emissions and achieve decarbonisation in its UK region, contributing to the UK’s legally binding net zero target.
Scope of work
- Carbon baselining
Broadway Malyan Holdings had previously calculated a carbon baseline for its UK operations for 2020/21, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial year 2022/23 was identified as a representative year of normal business operations globally and was adopted as the baseline year for operations in the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. Greengage established reporting boundaries, collected and analysed data, and calculated Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Data gaps were addressed using industry benchmarks. The findings, methodology, and recommendations were detailed in a comprehensive report. - Target setting
An overall net zero target was set for UK operations in line with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard. We also set operational energy use intensity targets for Broadway Malyan’s UK offices, following the latest industry guidance for achieving net zero in office buildings, along with detailed reduction targets for relevant Scope 3 categories. This approach allowed Broadway Malyan to prioritise reduction measures for the most material Scope 3 categories. - Net zero strategy
We then developed a net zero strategy for Broadway Malyan’s UK operations, with a tailored list of measures to support the company in meeting its net zero targets. This was informed by a workshop with their management team, with representatives from IT, legal, operations, purchasing, marketing, and office administration, which helped us gain insight into the complexities across different business functions. Discussions covered key areas like governance, building operations, energy procurement, transport, and procurement policies. This collaborative process produced a clear set of Scope 1, 2, and 3 reduction measures, which we prioritised for impact and practicality to support effective implementation.
