Axiom Architects Carbon Baseline and Net Zero Alignment

Greengage have been appointed by Axiom Architects to calculate a carbon baseline and to establish a pathway to net zero carbon.

Axiom Architects includes a team of over 40 staff comprising architects, technologists, and interior designers, with extensive experience in hospitality, residential, student housing, commercial and leisure sectors.

Carbon Baseline

Greengage’s appointment was to provide visibility across scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for Axiom Architects. To analyse and calculate the baseline, Greengage carried out a carbon footprint analysis, aligning with the GHG Protocol guidance and framework. This involved the calculation of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions relevant to Axiom Architects as a business organisation, in line with the defined boundaries of control. As an SME the initial focus was on Scope 1 and 2 data, analysing invoice data and calculating location-based and market-based emissions. Greengage also carried out detailed analysis into Axiom Architects’ Scope 3 data, calculating waste, water, business travel, employee commuting, work from home and leased assets emissions.

Net Zero Pathway

Following the completion of the carbon baseline assessment, Greengage supported Axiom Architects to develop a pathway to net zero carbon. This involved a net zero carbon roadmap which was based on the analysis of the carbon footprint. Greengage aligned Axiom Architects’ net zero pathway with the SBTi SME route, aiming for a 50% reduction of carbon emissions by 2030 and a 90% reduction by 2050. This ensured Axiom Architect’s net zero targets align with the latest climate science, in line with the global 1.5°C climate scenarios. To map annual carbon reduction Greengage utilised the science-based target ‘Absolute Contraction’ methodology, which involved the creation of a linear pathway to net zero.

Axiom

The following recommendations were provided to Axiom Architects to support with carbon reduction to reach net zero:

  • Adopt an overarching SBT carbon reduction target and consider additional ESG targets and objectives.
  • Review and improve data capture and reporting.
  • Review and reduce carbon and ESG impact of Axiom Architects supply chain.
  • Reduce operational activities to minimise carbon and ESG impacts.
  • Consider switching electricity supply to 100% renewable energy.
  • Engage with clients on projects to reduce the associated carbon impact.

Additionally, Greengage provided Axiom Architects recommendations about carbon neutrality and offsetting. Whilst offsetting cannot be used to achieve SBTi net zero targets, offsets can be purchased to achieve carbon neutrality. As part of these recommendations, Greengage provided a high level review of credible offsetting providers as well as key suggestions for target areas for emission reduction.

Testimonial

“We are pleased to be working with Greengage to help us calculate our carbon baseline and develop a pathway to net zero carbon. With Greengage’s support we will be able to better understand where our current carbon emissions lie and decipher which emissions scopes can be targeted for emission reduction.”
