University of Cambridge

The bold use of sustainable materials was at the forefront of the design of Homerton College’s new three storey timber framed structure that houses both the library, learning resource centre and lecture and theatre rooms. The exposed beams are both aesthetic and a safety feature with fire engineering integral to the design. By contrast the lecture and theatre rooms are housed in a four storey reinforced concrete framed building with exposed concrete slabs that create thermal mass; a strategy to help reduce ongoing energy use.

A BREEAM assessment of the 3,942 sqm site was provided by Greengage and identified significant benefits in terms of management and maintenance of the buildings. These included reduced energy and water consumption and sustainable waste management.

The University is committed to achieving sustainable design and through adopting the advice given by Greengage they were able to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
