Barnet Mental Health Unit

The existing mental health facility was constructed in the 1960’s but no longer met modern clinical requirements. The underused site was in poor condition and as a result the Trust wanted to extend and remodel the existing building to create a modern facility to meet the needs of all the user groups and the care in the community teams.

The building’s close proximity to existing residential properties, the extent of its remodelling and the implications of the intensification of the use, raised highways concerns that had to be carefully considered. This required extensive negotiations with officers prior to the submission of the planning application in order to address the various planning issues.

The scheme also raised concerns in the local community regarding the potential impact of the facility in terms of traffic, security and mental health care in the community.  Greengage worked with the Trust to engage the community, ensuring they listened to their concerns and provided reassurances to the matters raised by residents.
