Greengage undertook initial assessments of this Isle of Dogs site including a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) in support of a planning application for a proposed 15 storey residential development. The PEA identified the presence of Jersey cudweed, a plant protected under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.
Detailed mitigation plans were developed to support a Natural England Schedule 8 Conservation Licence to enable the proposed development. Greengage worked with the design team to produce plans for a Jersey cudweed living roof on one of the towers at the proposed site. Wider landscaping plans were also developed with the aim of enhancing ecology, reflecting targets in BREEAM and CSH for which Greengage also acted as the Suitably Qualified Ecologist.
A site wide Ecology Management Plan was developed, as well as a specific bat and bird box plan for the development to address planning condition requirements. Greengage acted in an Ecological Clerk of Works role overseeing the clearance of cudweed at the site and collection of the seed bank. Going forward Greengage will oversee the installation of the living roofs to ensure they are in accordance with BREEAM, planning and Natural England requirements, as well as undertake monitoring surveys of the ecological enhancement features across the site.
